IV. Excursion Details for 2012:
Excursion A - Social Impact Through Business
The line between traditional for-profit business and for-social impact non-profits is disappearing, as entrepreneurs and established organizations continue to blend doing well with doing good. Few realize, however, that the RTP region is a hotbed of activity within this rapidly maturing space. Learn firsthand about the power of social enterprise to transform the lives of former substance abusers at TROSA, a renowned, highly innovative Durham-based organization which builds life and work skills through involvement in an ever expanding portfolio of earned income ventures. The tour will be guided by Jeff Stern, Fuqua ‘03, and will be followed by a panel featuring local entrepreneurs and managers whose work blends business and social impact through a variety of means and missions. Panelists include Rachel Weeks, Founder and CEO of Schoolhouse; Stephanie Nieman, Director of Developed Market Standards at B Lab, Matt Kovac, former Corporate Responsibility Manager at iContact, and Kevin Macdonald, founder of TROSA; moderated by Maria Ruatto, a Fuqua 2012 grad and Durham-based social entrepreneur.

Excursion B – Economic Development: Revitalizing Downtown Durham
Durham has undergone a radical revitalization in the past few years – one that continues today, as former tobacco warehouses become home to chic lofts, shopping centers, restaurants, and cutting-edge office & lab space. Come see first-hand the transformation and excitement that is sweeping through Durham with a tour of the downtown neighborhoods currently undergoing redevelopment. Then join a panel discussion at Bull City Forward, a social enterprise incubation hub, to hear from local organizations responsible for designing, financing and building Durham’s renaissance.

Excursion C – Sustainable Development for a Green Economy
As a future business leader, you will need to be equipped with the skills to manage to the triple bottom line. Sustainability is not a fad; it simply makes good business sense. Join us on a visit to the offices of Burt’s Bees, a natural personal care products company founded on environmentally sustainable practices. After touring their headquarters in the American Tobacco District, you will engage with key local leaders in sustainability as they discuss energy, trade, and community development, while highlighting innovations in the field.

Excursion D – Educating & Empowering Durham's Youth
The application of business principles to the U.S. education system is transforming the way schools and supplementary education programs operate. From performance measurement to organizational change management, business leaders and concepts are reforming education. While visiting the Emily K Center, a space dedicated to out-of-school academic, character and leadership programming, you will hear how Coach K and his family are creating an impact with the youth in Durham. A panel of local nonprofit and education leaders will discuss education challenges and the transformative impact you can have on education as a future business leader.

Excursion E - Healthcare
There’s a reason why Durham’s nickname is the City of Medicine. Organizations here are hard at work to transform the health and well-being of people locally and globally, and Duke is at the center of it all. Take a tour of CAARE, Inc, a local community health center, and see how local health professionals are helping the community succeed beyond health delivery through economic development and start-up support. Gain a broader perspective on the innovations occurring in health care during a discussion with panelists from community health, life science industry economic development and venture capital backgrounds. Panelists include Jeff Clark, Managing General Partner of Aurora Funds; Joseph Nixon, Business Development Director at NC Biotech; Fred Johnson, Deputy Director Community Health at Duke University Medical Center; and moderator Brandy Salmon of the Center for Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology at RTI International.
