Dr. Andrew Murray

Andrew is a medical doctor with a deep understanding of and extensive experience with the clinical practice and funding models of numerous healthcare markets. After gaining both clinical and management qualifications, Andrew joined Eli Lilly, a major multi-national pharmaceutical company, where he led the South African market access team. In this role he built relationships with many major health insurance and managed care organizations to ensure optimal coverage policies for Lilly’s products.

Andrew joined Discovery Health in 2006 as head of Discovery’s managed care unit where he played a leading role in developing key business strategies and managed the implementation thereof. As a senior business unit leader responsible for a large and highly specialized team, he focused on optimizing Discovery’s managed care processes, IT systems and the supporting organizational structures thereby yielding significant operational efficiencies over a three-year period of time. In additional to such traditional General Management functions, Andrew’s role further required of him to manage in real-time complex or conflicting clinical trade-offs, often requiring his personal intervention to broker optimal solutions that balance the interests of the Patient, the Funder and Providers.

In 2010, Andrew relocated to China to join the executive leadership team of Ping An Health (a health insurance JV between Discovery and the Ping An Group of China) as post-integration COO. After reaching key operational milestones and preparing the business for hand-over to local leadership, he executed a planned transition into a highly specialized, strategic role. In his new capacity as Head of Strategic Risk Management, Andrew is the senior executive primarily responsible for ensuring the ongoing profitability and sustainability of Ping An’s insurance business. The Ping An Health JV combines the respective strengths of each corporate parent, leveraging Discovery’s deep specialist health insurance expertise and Ping An’s formidable brand and distribution channels. Ping An Health holds one of only four, specialist health insurance licenses granted in the Chinese market.

Andrew is married to Nelie Murray – they live in Shanghai, China with their daughter, Rebekah, who was born in Shanghai.
